A GROWING NEED FOR MORE ORGANSDespite medical advances in performing transplants over the past 25 years, a severe shortage of healthy organs for patients awaiting life saving transplant surgery continues to exist. In response to this shortage, treatments have been developed to help extend patients' survival while they wait for an organ. Large investments have also been made in efforts to increase organ donation rates. Public awareness programs and other public initiatives have resulted in some success in the U.S., Europe and Japan. The gap, however, between the number of available donor organs and the number of recipients on the waitlist continues to grow. US Waitlist Growth
Current cold preservation methods used for organ transportation contribute to this shortage by creating severe time limitations, as well as injury to the organ, resulting in significant underutilization of the current pool of consented, donated organs. TransMedics has developed the world's first commercial, portable, warm blood perfusion system for use in organ transplants that is designed to provide the benefits of a living donor transplant for all organs using new technology. Specifically, this new technology, called the Organ Care System, is designed to maintain an organ in a warm, functioning state outside of the body, pumping oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood through the organ while it is transported from donor to recipient. The first use of the TransMedics Organ Care System The Organ Care System has been developed to play a vital role in helping to increase the utilization of available organs from the pool of organs that now go unused by allowing more time between organ retrieval and transplant, increasing the distance an organ can travel, enabling assessment of the organ during transport, reducing ischemic damage to the organ during transport, and potentially improving the health of organs for better overall outcomes. |
